When talking Thoroughbreds, 'Louisiana Bred' is a term commonly used to describe foals who meet the criteria
for being accredited by the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeder's Association, and qualify for lucrative breeders awards. To become
accredited, the foal's Dam must reside in Louisiana and have foaled in Louisiana. Full By Laws outlining residency
rules can be found at www.louisianabred.com.
Each time an accredited foal races, the breeder(mare owner) of the foal receives a portion of
the earnings even if the breeder no longer owns the horse. In addition, stallion awards are paid to the foal's sire.
Due to the competative breeder's awards in Louisiana, our selection of local stallions is growing, as is our population
of broodmares and their offspring. All of this contributes positively to the local economy and gives our community a chance
to become involved in the exciting industry of horse racing.
Currently, breeders of accredited
Louisiana Bred foals are awarded 22.5% of the horse's 1st through 3rd place finish in any stakes race of $25,000.00 or
more at any track outside of Louisiana (worldwide). The awards are capped at a maximum purse of $150,000.00. For races within
the state of Louisiana, breeder's awards are paid at 22.5% of the horse's 1st through 3rd place finish. Each of the
four Louisiana racetracks are required to offer
three races at every meet that are strictly for accredited Louisiana-breds. The purses for the restricted races are lucatrive
and provide Thoroughbred owners and trainers with additional reasons to race accredited Louisiana-breds.
