So what's a Billabong? Billabong is the Australian Aboriginal word for pond. In the dry bush country,
the Billabong is a life source - critical to all the bush animals. It's a gathering place and the basis of many aboriginal
Dream Time tales. Here at The Billabong we breed Haflinger horses for their sound and sturdy qualities (but mostly
because they're so darn cute!). We also breed Louisiana Thoroughbreds and are looking to expand our Thoroughbred
broodmare band. We are members for the American Haflinger Registry, SouthEastern Haflinger Association, Louisiana Thoroughbred
Breeder's Association and the Southern Eventing and Dressage Association.
Located approximately an hour outside of New Orleans, The Billabong is situated
within minutes of Louisiana's largest stud farms. The farm has a total of 48 acres in a combination of pristine pasture
and wooded trails. The pastures are finished in four-board fence to insure the safety of our boarding horses
and feature plenty of shade and fresh, clean water. Soils are tested annualy and fertilized as needed for optimum equine
health. For the breeder, we offer a teasing stallion, veterinary stocks and a barn with timed lighting. Vet and
farrier are on call and can be arranged on the owner's behalf. Transportation to local stud farms is available as needed.
Spacious foaling stalls feature straw bedding, electric heaters and will soon be equipped with web cams. The barn offers bunking
quarters for foaling season and a kitchenette, bathroom, sitting area and tack storage for boarders. We specialize
in mare care but also offer a wonderful retreat for your young horse, retiree or resting horse. We do allow riders on
a limited basis and have a fenced grass arena and 15 acres of trails. We're equipped with 18 stalls, stallion
stalls, foaling stalls and one temperature controlled stall for veterinary recovery and care. Mares are provided group
pastures throughout the yaer and individual paddocks when foaling time nears. New foals are imprinted, haltered at birth and
handled daily. Our own foals are trained to lead, tie, bathe and load prior to being sold. Owners Frank and Sunny Francois
live onsite and personally attend to the needs of our equine boarders.
